Mahna Mahna -- Up Close and Personal

No freeeeekin way!!  Click on the image and see what my fabulous fun friend, David sent me today.

I've been getting so many emails and comments about the song that plays on my journal.  I thought it was originally from Sesame Street.  In my head, the "doodoos" are replaced with "beebee-padeedeep"  But the more info I find, the less I remember.  [If anyone has more accurate information, please share.]  The one that most people seem to remember is this version from The Muppet Show.  It features Mahna Mahna and the two Snowths.  It's still just as funny today!  Probably the best muppet sketch ever!  And it wouldn't be complete without two grumpy old hecklers and balcony banter:

#1:  The question is, what is a Mahna Mahna?

#2:  The question is, who cares?

Ahhh yes, fun for the whole family.  Who couldn't love this frazzled little muppet-guy?  Such a hipster-rocker man!

Thanks for the link David. You rock.  Now, where's your blog?

I loved it!  I can remember hearing that song way back in the late 60s, so it didn't originate on the Muppet Show.  I believe I heard it on the Red Skelton Show -don't how far back it goes before that.  It was around the time of the Apollo space program and the moon shots.  Red's show had these "moon people" doing very short sketches between some of the commercial breaks and I think that was when this song was played.

umm....so have you seen the Dr. Pepper commercial that has this song on it? Is this a coinky-dink, or are they stealing ideas from you?!?!?! :)

I think this first appeared on the Ed Sullivan show of all places, then on Sesame Street, and finally on the Muppet Show.  Mahna Mahna is the name of the hipster, too.  On Sullivan he appeared more like a normal person (meaning flesh toned) and wearing a striped turtleneck shirt.

This is a classic clip....all you ever have to do is mutter "mahna mahna" and you're guaranteed to get a "doo doo doo doodoo" out of anyone you meet!

I love this song, too.  What it immediately brought to mind was probably my favorite show, The Office, which is from BBC.  Its a hilarious mockumentary that takes place in a UK office environment with probably the best characters I have ever seen in a tv show.  At the begin of the second season the show opened up with several of the characters breaking out into the song.  Awsome.  Check out the show if you get a chance

This song is also a bit of a recurring theme on the new NBC sitcom Committed.  In the very first episode we see Marni, the lead female character, on a date with a guy and she wants him to go "Mahna mahna" while she does the "do doo do doo doo" and he totally doesn't get it, so her response is to say something like "If you want, I can do the mahna mahnas."  She's a quirky one.  Also, her cell phone ringtone is this song so it pops up every few episodes.

I recently came upon the knowledge that Mahna Mahna was actually written by acclaimed Italian composer Piero Umilliani. He also wrote the song Crepuscolo Sul Mare which is featured in the movie Ocean's Twelve. Strange contrast.
