Movie Recommendations [pt 1]

I don't rent movies very often.  For one thing, they're expensive.  For another, I'm a little embarrassed to rent bulky videos as all the hip and groovy people are flipping through sleek DVDs.  But last weekend's rainstorm was perfect movie-watching weather.

I'm the last person who should be writing a movie review but I certainly can recommend the few movies I saw last week.  Just because I liked them.

THE GURU  Cheryl insisted we see this movie because - even though I give the overall quality of the film a less-than B-rating - Marisa Tomei's performance is priceless.  If you like Tomei you'll adore her in this movie.  We were rolling our eyes, slapping our foreheads and laughing silly.

SPELLBOUND  I loved this documentary about eight students' climb to the National Spelling Bee.  The preparation.  The sweat.  The tears.  I had no idea it's one of the most-watched events on ESPN.  As these kids and their families were being interviewed, I was surprised by the amount of ignorance that exists in our country, still today.  Shows my own ignorance, I guess.  One scene showed a local Hooters marquee, "Congradulations for winning the regional spelling bee" [Note the misspelling of 'congradulations' - Oh the irony!]  And don't get me started on Hooters!  Overall, it's a fascinating and well-made movie.  I watched it twice.  Visit their website and play hangman.  Get five in a row to add your initials to the national board.

Tomei is adorable! And I've actually seen Spellbound at the rental place recently. It looked pretty good. LoL on the irony! Great reviews! And I'm glad you had a fun movie weekend. Those are the best. :)

Spellbound sounds like something I'd enjoy...but not Doug. When we meet, Trish...we'll have to rent a bunch of movies 'just for us!' LOL

Thanks for the review, sweety!

I don't know if you would be interested, but I just bought the movie "Thirteen" -- wow...it is an incredible movie...if you ever watch it let me know what you think - it had me in awe that kids at 13 are actually doing that stuff like sex and drugs...hell all I cared about was basketball and the phone...

I saw the previews to The Guru, it looked like it would be a cheap good laugh. And I have also seen the previews to Spellbound, and I remember thinking...they made a movie about...a spelling bee. and then I started hearing the movie was pretty darn good. I will have to look into checking that one out. thanks freee. :)

SLOMO - Add these to your Netflix queue. Well, at least Spellbound. I think you'll like it.

BRIDGETT - When we meet, we won't have time for movies with all the yacking and giggling! Get Spellbound for you then :)

MARY - I didn't even know the spelling bee was televised [till I watched Spellbound] I definitely don't want to miss it! And I wanna see a pic of that kickflip!! I'm tempted to buy a skateboard.

NIKKI - Thirteen is my favorite movie from last year. I haven't stopped raving about it in AOL-J [I think I strong-armed Bridgett into watching it - and I'm sure SloMo is close!] I was really moved by that movie. Wow, you liked it enough to buy it! Basketball and the phone sounds about right for 13. Times are changing.

SHARKY - I thought the same thing about Spellbound when I first heard of it. I think you'll like it. And yes, The Guru is a cheap good laugh. :)

EEEK! Let the Geekdom reputation start... I was actually a spelling bee winner. No, I didn't make it to nationals, but I did make it to state. My dad, the pooh pooh head that he is, always ridiculed my ability to spell. Thank goodness I found a job where excellent spelling is required just to show him he was wrong! LOL

I'm still damaged goods from losing a spelling bee in 2nd grade on the word "Parole". I forgot the "E" at the end. I 4th-grader end up winning, and I came in 2nd. Which wasn't bad for a 2nd-grader!!

Now SPELLBOUND sounds intriguing. I didn't even know such a thing existed! Thanks for the rec.

In a mood for a smart comedy? I recommend OH BROTHER, WHERE ART THOU? with George Clooney. I laugh like a hyena every time I see this one. Proudly!

RC - Haha! Sorry honey. Wasn't thinking! Take a deep breath and attack these movies one at a time. :P

DIANNE - Let's hear it for the geeks! Woohoo! Way to show up your pooh-pooh-head dad. :)

CINDY - I agree that sometimes we're missing out if we don't read all the comments. They can really add to the entry - sometimes they're even BETTER than the entry. lol

KAREN - Awww... hey, second to a 4th grader - very good! I will never forget how to spell TENDENCY thanks to one of my spelling bee mistakes. ::sigh::

ANDREA - I think you'd like Spellbound. Let me know [if you rent it]. And I'm sorry, I can't even get through Brother, Where Art Thou. Just not funny to me. I'm like that though. I do love Vacation and Fletch and some other whacky flicks though. It's hit and miss with me!

I've heard about Spellbound, I'll definitely rent THAT. As for The Guru, I heard it's a take on Bollywood, with lots of singing and dancing? Though I'm sure it's not the type of musical we're accustomed to!

Sad to say but I rent videos too! My DVD player is on my computer and it's just not as nice as watching a movie on my TV. But, you know I'm beginning to feel like the last of the video watching lamos because the new release section keeps getting smaller and smaller. DVD's are taking over! UG! As soon as I buy a player they'll come out with something else that I'll be behind on. :-) ---Robbie
