A Note About Copyright

A few of you have asked me about the legalities of posting your own [original] writing in your journal - i.e. poetry, lyrics, short stories.  I was pretty sure about the US copyright laws [phew!]  John Scalzi confirms here that once you write it, it's yours!  [think about the date/time stamp on your journal entries!]  There are a few exceptions but they all involved your permission.

So WRITE ON!  Post those poems!  Play those original songs!  Share your stories!  And - of course - journal and blog to your heart's content!  That's what we're all here for anyway, isn't it?

COOLNESS!! Thanks Freee! I've been tossing around turning my entries from all 6 of my journals into a book someday. It's good to know no one can rip my "material" off.

The important thing to remember about this, unfortunately, is that most people do NOT respect copyright laws! So unless you're willing to SUE if someone steals your material, it might be best to keep it offline. Sad but true. :(

You know I have given this thought. Have been writing since the age of 12. I have shared a few poems, (lol, not sure I'd call my 10 minute Thanksgiving list a poem) but I have lots more... Maybe a few worthy of someone stealing. Would hate if someone stole my words, but then what good are words if not shared? Oh the dilemma. Thanks for this entry Freee... got me thinking.

Thanks Freee! Im also glad to see your thanksgiving went well! You will have to give me the recipe for the Rice Dream mashed potatoes! Do you just use that instead of Milk? hehe. I dunno though, it took me a YEAR to convince ben that Soy and rice milk actually taste good! He still wont touch the stuff...but what he doesnt know wont hurt him! I did, however, switch him to at least drink organic milk! That was HARD enough. LOL. ~Shells

Shelli ~ YEP, Rice Dream instead of milk. That's all. Sometimes I don't even use butter (but I did this time). It's sweet and creamy enough w/o it though. Try it!

Copyright is a factor with my photos and it does influence what I'll place online. Some photos won't ever get uploaded because people do grab photos and then use them without regard. I do make choices with what I'll place online but, the positive feedback from sharing photos far outways the "stealing" fears for me!
